A free market really is a marvel of an intuitively driven mycelium network operating miraculously with unfathomable degrees of complexity and benevolence aiming ever-upward on a trajectory of infinite brilliance and genius. Sigh....I'll never look at a pencil the same way again.
well said. When I look at a pencil now, I tend to think of the loggers and the waitresses pouring coffee in rural diners with the smell of pine in the air, right outside the window.
But then I inevitably think of the coffee, and the ship that carried the beans for South America, and the people growing hemp for the ropes and lines aboard that ship, and then I am right back to rural farms.
See?! This is why I love you. Who else is this considerate and appreciative of all the little things? The country sounds great....let me know when you need a gardening troubadour.
A fascinating examination, have never seen it before. Thanks so much for sharing 🫡
I am glad—I was worried that everyone already knew this classic!
A small piece of the pencil making process and in true Japanese style, remarkably labour intensive.

The Process X videos are a delightful rabbit hole.
I did not know that pencil leads started out so floppy. I am looking forward to watching the rest. Thanks!
Hayek called Capitalism “the extended order of human cooperation”, sounds like the pencil is a great example of that.
💯🔥

I guess my heart lies out in the country.

I think I might need a gardening troubadour every day! But I will certainly let you know when the logistics make it more convenient!

A good companion piece is RW Grant's Incredible Bread Machine.
Multiple versions on YouTube. I like the Ronald Reagan reading.

"We much prefer the rule of men…"
Whoa!
Really good.
I agree but what we have the past few decades is mostly not a Free Market it is a Plutocracy.
Yup. It's been mixed-market for a long time, and worsening over time.
That's beautiful
I own a copy from my buddies over at the Mises Institute.
My copy is from FEE :-)
I love FEE, what is your favorite article?
FEE is/are amazing. I cited so many of their articles for my book!
This one is one of my favorites, and I cited it several times:
https://fee.org/articles/how-nationalism-and-socialism-arose-from-the-french-revolution/
Maybe mine is too, now that I think about it. I don't have it in front of me.
Oh, yeah, that may be more likely, since FEE probably owns the copyright. I actually went and looked at mine to be sure :-)
I wrote for LRC for a while, and its all kind of a blur
LRC?
