It’s ironic that 1/2 the population thinks global warming is an existential threat to the survival of the mankind, at the same time the same group thinks we can win a nuclear war with Russia.
My concern is today’s weather forecast being sunny and 510 degrees in Boston. Now that’s real global warming.
It is wise to monitor the self-destruction of the rentier class from safe cover, but carefully prepare to block the impulse to become emotionally involved as things deteriorate.
Nukes would be bad, but would save most of us the trouble of struggling to survive. Social collapse is more likely our chief problem, as we are in the midst of an engineered one at the moment. It isn’t ugly yet. Monitor, but disengage.
Just in case, some advice from an old guy who plans to crack a bottle of the good stuff and wait for the mob to come over the hill:
The new feudalists have a lot of good tech, but they only trust people they can corrupt; it’s all they know or understand. That’s weak AF, once the hammer falls.
You need a few hands of adults and their children, and everybody over 8 must be able to walk ten miles a day on trail food.
Your hidden book safe should be as humidity and light-free as possible. Start with math and engineering textbooks from the fifties and sixties.
Like a rock wall that leans out for 20 years then suddenly falls, the denouement will be fast. Be farther from the city than hungry people can run before they start catching and eating each other.
Education is a parent’s duty. First and last, they will learn what you live. Therefore, belovèd, live some good old Newtonian physics, on a foundation of second-year trig, with a heaping helping of knot-tying skills.
Most of the waddling survivalist wannabes will run out of ammo before they run out of alcohol, then starve for lack of trapping experience. If you want to arm your family for larger game and self-defense, learn the bola. You can practice on those robot dogs they have out patrolling the parks. Cows are slow but tough to bring down. Deer are fragile but fleet. Thinking ahead is your deadliest weapon.
Twelve waders scaring fish into a downstream weir are more efficient than fifty professional fly fishermen.
There is evidence of agrarian settlements in temperate zones going back to before the Younger Dryas, 11,000 years ago: You have the genes for it. No little house was ever raised on a prairie without voluntary mutualism, whose currency is social obligation. We were all raised in communist cells, aka nuclear families. Your new ideology/religion/cult dogma/politics will be hoping someone returns with food today.
Remember that 80% of your neighbors were stupid enough to make themselves and their children the test subjects for an experimental gene-editing injection… rather than buck the herd. Herds can be dangerous, but smart they are not.
My father's primary engineering texts, Handbook of Mechanical Engineering and another whose title I can't recall are at my farm in another state. I found them when I was cleaning out the old family home after my brother's demise. I remember Dad referencing those books when I was too small to see the top of his desk. They are wonderful and irreplaceable, and as soon as I retrieve them I will forward them to you for the low, low price of preserving them for another generation, if you will.
Beyond that, algebra books that actually teach the math, some practical trig and geometry. During my stint as a toolmaker, the only math I used more than geometry was fractions. Most tech colleges have tech math books; the kind for people who need working math. If you can find a practical design book for things like ramjet pumps and gear-cutting jigs, that would be priceless. Never pass a Goodwill; they'll try to sell anything, even old textbooks. Estate sales are an excellent source not only for books but for old tools. Before power tools took over, there were ten thousand clever gadgets for making repetitive cuts, bores, and the like. Don't overlook old hand tools at estate sales. You may have noticed that good steel isn't sold in hardware stores anymore. My grandfather's cheap farm tools from a hundred years ago are much better metal than anything I can order, at any price, today. I hope to escape to the farm next week. I'll DM you about those books. The original Firefox books were a pretty good series for eastern woods lore, though maybe not as practical out west. I don't have those anymore; girl I lent them to went poof like the fairy queen in a fable.
I bought a 100-year-old cast iron grinder. It is such an impressive tool—works perfectly and will never break. If I knew more about tools, I would start looking for more such old tools.
As far as the books go, I would be happy just to hear titles. But if you want to send me physical books, then I do promise to start a generational library with them!
Yes, the alarmists want to end our carbon footprint by taking away coal plants so we can pay 3x as much to heat and AC our homes. Add that to all the other taxes and fees. Getting closer to "you will own nothing".
Sometimes what we think small gestures of acceptance, that are forced on us, or being told this is normal behavior, or just go along with it, turn into some of the biggest issues in our lives. We seem to be tested every day, undercurrents slowly move us, subtlety pushed, nudged, little by little until we wake up one day and we see all of these small manipulations have turn into, take it or lose your job. I sometimes wonder if there is a certain group that does these things to us to just see if we will allow it, how far can we push these common folk? Bad company surely corrupts good character. You know how medical staff, doctors, nurses, etc., at hospitals, were forced to take experimental injections like it or not. Or I’m sure you’ve heard about states allowing men into the ladies locker rooms and showers. Well I can tell you this is taking place now. My wife and her co workers are forced to allow an intact man, cross dresser, into their locker room where they change. As uncomfortable and abusive that this is no one can say a word or you will be fired for discrimination. Most every nurse in that locker room is completely uncomfortable and against this policy of being forced to change in front of a strange man. Slowly over time this manipulation became policy and if you speak up your fired. I’m not sure why the upper people in the hospital, let’s take the director of nursing is not forced to get undressed in front of this man as a gesture, showing that she is on board with forcing females to be abused in this way. If it’s such a good policy I think all of the management, directors, coordinators etc. should be forced to undress in front of male doctors nurses and staff because maybe I am uncomfortable not knowing what these women look like naked. Does my being uncomfortable not have the same stature as a man with gender dysphoria who says he’s uncomfortable changing in the men’s locker room. Do children that have major or minor procedures done need this type of controversial situation thrown in front of them while getting a procedure done. This is the slow creep of totalitarianism, is it not? The loss of our most basic freedom and decency of privacy. Let us, the elites, see just how far we can push the commoners. The upper hospital elites are never placed into these abusive situations. How can it be right that my wife, again, against her will, be forced to undress in front of a strange man, or be fired. Someone please explain to me how this is fair and appropriate. Where have all the feminists gone? J.Goodrich
" I think all of the management, directors, coordinators etc. should be forced to undress in front of male doctors nurses and staff"
—Good idea.
We were just subjected to an all-gender bathroom on our trip last week. I was fine with girls in prom dresses doing bong hits by the sinks, but I am a guy. My wife was NOT happy being alone in the bathroom with a sweaty dude standing at a urinal.
Very aggravating that the common staff has to undress and dress in front of a guy in drag, but the management and doctors don’t. How this doesn’t end up as lawsuits against the hospital shows how sick our society has become. It’s insanity.
28° C is ~82.4° F - what kind of ridiculous "heat health warning" even is that, unless maybe the dew point is in the 60s/70s? That's a cool August afternoon or a pleasant beach day where I live!
32° C (~90° F) is where a heat wave would begin and we'd get TV warnings in the USA. The 90s were a decent enough decade, but they're terribly uncomfortable temperatures. :P

Excellent point.
And I was just in Boston last week. But the weather was pretty nice.
Without government, who would we have to laugh at?
True!

Do you have a list of book recommendations for the safe?

Thank you, it would ease my mind, Christopher. They’ll just be dumpstered when my wife and I pass.
I would be honored.

Yup.
Maybe get together with friends and buy land with solar panels and small-scale wind and hydro?
Excellent and very timely Memes!
Well I was going to say that, but you beat me to it!

No. It is ALWAYS OK to punch a NAZI. Especially a Jewish/Israeli Gaza Genocider NAZI, punch them a LOT...
Everybody hates it when women say No to having children. It's almost like men think women are property or something.
