You have inspired me, friend. Thank you. I will restack in a bit when I decide how I want to say it. But I want you to know right now that I have already committed to being able to record this year. I REALLY want to play in 432 also. So, I am going to start working toward that goal. I have set an arbitrary goal for myself of August of this year (6 months out) to have enough in my house to work with to start recording. My son plays drums too. Thanks for inspiring me. I had a bad day yesterday and suddenly I am brimming with ideas. It goes like that. Next time I feel down and like my efforts are taking me nowhere I will remember that usually on the other side of that is a whole heck of a lot of inspiration. We just have to HANG IN THERE! - I have to get to the work that will pay for me to even see these dreams fulfilled right now, but I will be back. Have a great Friday.

That's why the far date of August. (just as a mind map of the next 6 months, to help me stay focused.) And there is a lot of regular job type stuff between now and then. I will check yours out and comment on it. I look forward to it. I'll be back later. Substack time is over for today. Diving in on some grantwriting. PEACE! Have fun making more music! It's so fun.

I’ve three articles that break a few paradigms and show the medical and scientific’s Wild West is retarded with deceptions.

We breathe air not oxygen explains why oxygen is toxic and why it can damage and kill. Our physiology is run on hydration not oxygenation.

Hydration equals salt plus water.

The atmosphere does not contain oxygen and nitrogen as these are dry manufactured gases and air is moist.

I link to Peter and Pete’s demonstration of oxygen becoming nitrogen.

How does salt restriction lead to heart dis-ease and fear based reactionary thinking?

I think the pandemic though is was a bad and terrible thing to do from the powers it served to open the eyes of so many who really trusted and believed the system and that the government cared about the well being of citizens. If someone suspected all along this event was the proof, for the ones who knew this event the final stroke and for the blind or ignorant or oblivious this event made them to awake or at least take more responsibility in their own decisions and not being so lazy and complacent in their conformity to the status quo, my neighbor told me once that I think too much and make me worry that he in the other hand as long “ he had his Netflix and his beer” was good. I was horrified and I showed it because he added “ what? You cannot do anything about it “ I told him “ you don’t deserve freedom and yes I can do something about it, I can removed myself from the powers plans” . Sadly we need to be altogether or the most of people to awake, because there are many millions like my neighbor out there, they need to understand that we have been indoctrinated in believe things that aren’t truth or that there aren’t other ways to do things, and that neither It is true. My approach is different of course.

Got any recommendations for hard rock/metal that you like?

Do you like Ignea? Devilskin? In This Moment?

Expand full comment

I don’t know how to give brief answers regarding anything I’m passionate about, so I apologize in advance.

I love many genres, as well as a lot of genre-defying artists. In hard rock and metal I’m actually stuck on old school stuff and looking to expand my own music library, honestly. I’d welcome recs from you! I’m usually listening to Metallica, Pantera, Mudvayne, Mastodon, Tool, Slipknot, Stone Sour, Smashing Pumpkins....

Though they’re not exactly hard rock or metal, I love to recommend Them Crooked Vultures. They’re a Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, John Paul Jones supergroup with just one album, but I think they’re great.

I also listen to indie rock, punk, jazz, classical, grunge, ska, old school funk, disco, soul, classic rock, blues/blues rock, and bands like Talking Heads, Sasquatch, Wolfmother, Cibo Matto, Radiohead, The Von Bondies, Soledad Brothers, Modest Mouse.... pretty much the only genre I can’t stand is country - new or old - unless it’s Johnny Cash, because he transcends genres.

*takes a deep breath* So, I didn’t really answer your question, I’m sorry. On the subject of music, I lose control very easily. 😅

Expand full comment
author

I am checking our all your recommendations (the ones I don't already know) now. Thank you :-) I like a ton of different genres too, including fairly obscure stuff.

You are the first person I have ever heard mention Cibo Matto. I bought one of their CDs back in the late 90s based on one song. The rest of the album was totally different, but I liked it anyway.

And I have also never heard anyone say the words, "Nah, I don't like Johnny Cash." Everyone likes Johnny Cash (as far as I know).

(I just added a Sasquatch song to my playlist.)

Expand full comment

And you are the first person I’ve encountered that knows Cibo Matto, funny! Which song made you buy a CD? For me it was 2 songs: Sugar Water and Spoon. I have an eclectic playlist with songs from the likes of Beck, No Doubt, Nina Simone, Modest Mouse, X Ambassadors, Cake, Norma Tanega, Weezer, Old Blind Dogs, Cage the Elephant, and more, including Cibo Matto’s “Know Your Chicken” - I get some funny reactions from people when I play it at work.

I love Sasquatch. 🙂

Other than the obvious bands like Metallica, I honestly don’t know which of the bands I like from the past 30+ years are well-known or niche. I just know what I like. I also tend to fall in love with early stuff bands do before they hit mainstream popularity, then I lose interest. Good examples are U2 - I don’t like anything after The Unforgettable Fire. The White Stripes - first 3 albums are best. The Strokes, debut album. Early Radiohead before Thom Yorke became so leftist preachy.

Another metal band I like is Every Time I Die, and not just because they hail from my hometown. IIRC they were named best metal band by Revolver early 2000’s. They’re a bit screaming thrash, but I like that in moderation. Check out the song Ebolarama.

Since you also have eclectic taste, one of my fave bands of all time is The Tragically Hip. If you don’t know them, they’re huge in Canada. Sadly, lead singer Gord Downie died from a glioblastoma. I was fortunate to see them in Toronto in 2016 on their last tour after his diagnosis. Another good Canadian band is July Talk (first album is best, sort of bluesy indie rock). My fiancé basically only likes old school metal, but even he likes July Talk and would go to concerts with me before we moved 1,000+ miles from NYS.

Early Ben Kweller is good - I only have his first two albums. Gomez, early stuff, again. Imelda May’s first 2 albums if you like a little rockabilly. St. Germain for nu jazz. Flatfoot 56 for Celtic rock. The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. Verbena. The Flaming Lips. The Decemberists.

I used to have more than 20k songs in my library, but I’ve lost some stuff over the years, or deleted things that didn’t hold up over time for me. Also, there’s another genre I dislike as intensely as country: pop. I cannot do pop music (other than the rare guilty pleasure that hooks me even though I don’t want it to).

What are some obscure artists you listen to? I feel like I’m in a bit of a rut lately and need to expand my horizons.

Cibo Matto—yeah, it was Sugar Water for me. It was on the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" soundtrack, and I had to have it. But then I liked the rest of that album too.

For suggestions…

I don't love country, but I do love bluegrass. Totally different vibe. Try Allison Kraus or Dan Tyminski's solo stuff.

I am listening to a lot of Otyken and The Hu. (I have dug throat-singing ince I first heard the Gyuto Monks.

How about Blues Saraceno?

Caro Emerald for jazzy stuff.

The Haxans sing about evil $h1+, but the music itself is good.

I have been enjoying all the nordic stuff. Totally adore Eivor. (But then I also listen to Heilung, Danheim, etc.)

Try Delain and Dinosaur Pile-up.

Dirt Poor Robins and Flyleaf are good Christian music. So is Kings X, in a different way.

Have you listened to Eluveitie?

I saw Elysian Fields live in a small club in Silver Lake. To this date, my favorite concert ever. It's all sexual double entendres, so I am not sure how you would feel about that, but it's very well done.

You want to get really off the beaten track—since I was 11 years old, my single favorite album of all time is Malicorne's second album. Breton folk-rock.

Halestorm? The Pretty Reckless? Dorothy?

Halsey and Lorde for good indie-pop? At least a few songs. ZZ Ward too. Again, kinda pop, maybe, but she's a serious musician from the live vids I've seen.

In This Moment—can't forget them!!

Jem. She just wants you to be happy.

Juno Reactor will keep you moving!

Kati Ran.

The Kiffness, LOL

Larkin Poe is hot blues!

The Hot Damns.

Metric. I really love a few of their songs.

Samantha Fish jams.

Try Shireen.

Trobar de Morte. Valravn?

Volbeat, since you like dude singers.

Russian folk metal like Грай ("grai") is good.

How's that for a start? I tried to focus on new(er) stuff, as opposed to just saying you should totally listen to Zeppelin, Sabbath, and Fleetwood Mac, man. LOL

I know how hard it is to find new music, especially as we get older. So I tried to help.

Expand full comment

This is great! Thanks for focusing on newer stuff since I’m already on the classics like Bowie, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Fleetwood Mac, etc.

Some of these bands I’m a bit familiar with, but most not at all, so I’m excited to check them out. Metric are often recommended with July Talk. I think JT’s third album may be more like Metric.

Been looking for Nordic stuff. Do you like Goat? I love them.

In Christian music I love Third Day, esp their early alt and southern rock sound. Smalltown Poets for indie rock. Clear for indie folk.

Thanks so much for the exchange. I so enjoy introducing others to music I enjoy and getting good recs in return. I’m always open to more discussion about music and additional suggestions, so if you think of more, please share. In the meantime, I’ll get busy with this list.

Skipping around a bit…

I am listening to "Ebolarama" now. Won't add it because it's got that 300 bpm vibe I don't like.

I did just add "You're Dead" by Norma Tanega.

U2—dang, I saw them with The Alarm and Elvis Costello at the New Haven Colosseum in '83 or '84? They, and REM, and a few other bands from that era are things that I do not listen to at all now.

Neal Peart of Rush also died of a glioblastoma. (I love Rush.) So sad.

I am listening to, and digging, July Talk right now. Will add some!

Just added one Gomez song. And one Imelda May. Digging her. Will listen to more later.

I grew up in the Celtic music world, with my mom playing in various Irish/Scottish folk bands. More folk, less rock, but the rock fusion stuff is great. Will listen to more Flatfoot 56.

Adding Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs for later too.

Re: pop… I don't like a ton either, but I challenge you not to like this song!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQQ5CeFamHI Don't watch—just listen. And in case you're wondering whether she's a serious musician or not…she is: https://christophercook.substack.com/p/eva-avilas-great-gig-in-the-sky

Thanks for the suggestions!

Expand full comment

Also love Rush. And various kinds of folk music, especially Celtic and Scottish - doesn’t have to be rock fusion. “Is There for Honest Poverty” by Old Blind Dogs is a song I particularly love. That’s cool about your mom!

Eva Avilas. Never heard of her or that song, but I can’t deny it’s catchy. It may not end up on my “guilty pleasures” list with random singles by the likes of Franz Ferdinand and 30 Seconds to Mars, but I can’t say for sure it won’t either. 😳

Expand full comment

At first listen I like the three you mentioned. I don’t pay much attention to subgenres, but that style is what I think of as symphonic or melodic metal. Ignea is similar to Within Temptation, but I like her alto vocals better than the soprano of Within Temptation. Devilskin evokes a little Disturbed for me. I tend to gravitate to male vocalists. What about Otep or Lacuna Coil?

Expand full comment
author

For symphonic stuff, I like Ignea and Epica more than Within Temptation. Within Temptation does that fast drumming thing, which I don't like.

I very much like Lacuna Coil.

I stopped trying with Otep when I realized that their lyrics were preaching left-wing crap.

Expand full comment

I’ve never personally been into Otep, but an ex-boyfriend was - he liked a lot of screaming. Also, that was 15+ years ago. Lacuna Coil I still listen to from time to time. My listening choices at any given moment are mood-driven, as I’m sure it is for most people.

I listened to "I told you so," and I laughed. Like most conspiracy theorists, he's half right.

But he was right about 9-11, building 7, and fluoride, not to mention a few. NASA is point of contention, because they had a camera malfunction on the apollo mission and had to re-film the moon landing on a stage. Gravity still can't be figured out by using modern science. It it a wave form, or is it because of mass?

It all reminds me of this. "They hunted till darkness came on, but they found

Not a button, or feather, or mark,

By which they could tell that they stood on the ground

Where the Baker had met with the Snark.

In the midst of the word he was trying to say,

In the midst of his laughter and glee,

He had softly and suddenly vanished away—

For the Snark was a Boojum, you see."

Yeah, I felt the same about the song. I did not have to agree with all his theories to love it!

To be fair - all statements in the context of 'I told you so' are the epitome of 'smug' hubris and pejorative virtue-signaling. Funny or not.

What's peculiar, is when I click on the link - it takes me to YouTube, so clearly he's not "banned" and his 'songs' haven't been "taken-down"... Hmmmmmmm. Seems like more hubris to me.

It's not a parody of any song I have ever heard. Sounds like original music to me.

Hubris is funny when it's ridiculous, absurd, and obviously self deprecating. Like Monty Pythons famous "Lumberjack Song", or much of the work of Tenacious D, but this isn't that. This is political hubris, and that is cringe for me.

Just being objective & honest.

The Pharma video is definitely age-restricted on YouTube. He claims that that video was banned once and then re-uploaded on YT, and the other one was taken down from Instagram. Having had videos throttled, taken down, and demonetized on YT, and been censored on multiple other platforms, I have no particular reason to doubt those claims.

My use of the word parody was not regarding the song, but the lyrics—in other words, an entity could have assumed he was writing a parody of conspiracy theorists generally, as opposed to being serious about the claims made in the song.
