You cannot have a massive redistribution operation—in which money is taken from some and given for the sole and exclusive use of others, as leftists want—without a large and powerful state. All anti-authoritarian noises made by leftists are temporary until they can gain power and use the state to take your stuff. Not all statism is leftism, but all leftism is statism.
Don't be so hard on government. All those useless types, the deranged, the demented, the thieves, the grifters and the socialists need somewhere to hang out.
