Can you think of any example ever in the history of democracy where this did not eventually become the case?
If so, I need to know—because as of right now I don’t think any such example does exist…or can exist.
It's easier to think of examples the other way: conservative dictators who retired from office rather than perpetuating an authoritarian regime. For example, Sulla (138-78 BCE)
